EMG (Electromyography) is a diagnostic test that measures the electrical activity of muscles at rest and during contraction. It involves inserting small electrodes (or needles) into the muscle tissue to record the electrical signals generated by muscle fibers. EMG helps evaluate muscle function and diagnose conditions like muscle weakness, nerve damage, carpal tunnel syndrome, herniated discs, and various neuromuscular disorders. It is often used alongside nerve conduction studies (NCS) to assess the health of muscles and the nerves controlling them.
