Conjunctival Swab (Lt.) for AFB

A Conjunctival Swab (Lt.) for AFB (Acid-Fast Bacilli) is a diagnostic test used to detect the presence of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (the bacteria that causes tuberculosis) in the conjunctiva of the eye. In this test, a swab is taken from the left eye's conjunctival sac, which is the mucous membrane lining the eyelid and covering the white part of the eye. The sample is then stained using the Ziehl-Neelsen stain, which helps visualize acid-fast bacilli under the microscope. This test is typically performed when there is suspicion of ocular tuberculosis, which can cause eye inflammation, pain, and vision changes. It is especially useful in diagnosing TB when symptoms involve the eyes or if the patient has other risk factors for tuberculosis.
