CAPD Fluid for Gram Stain
A Gram stain of CAPD (Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis) fluid is performed to detect bacterial infections, particularly peritonitis, in patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis. The procedure involves collecting a sample of the dialysate (CAPD fluid) and applying the Gram stain technique, which categorizes bacteria into Gram-positive or Gram-negative based on the structure of their cell walls. The test helps identify the presence of bacterial pathogens and provides preliminary information on the type of bacteria. Gram-positive organisms (such as Staphylococcus aureus) will stain purple, while Gram-negative organisms (like Escherichia coli) will stain pink.
