Pleural fluid for GeneXpert (MTB) testing is used to detect the presence of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB), the bacteria responsible for tuberculosis (TB), in pleural fluid. The GeneXpert MTB test is a rapid molecular diagnostic test that identifies TB DNA and provides results within hours. It is especially useful when TB is suspected as the cause of pleural effusion, particularly in cases where traditional smear microscopy or culture might be negative. The procedure involves collecting pleural fluid via thoracentesis (needle aspiration), followed by testing using the GeneXpert platform. Risks include infection, bleeding, or lung puncture.
