Pleural Fluid for AFB
Pleural fluid for AFB (acid-fast bacilli) testing is used to detect tuberculosis (TB) infections in the pleural space. If a patient has a pleural effusion (fluid in the pleural cavity) suspected to be caused by TB, a sample of pleural fluid is collected through thoracentesis. The fluid is then tested for the presence of AFB, which are bacteria responsible for TB. The test involves staining the fluid sample and examining it under a microscope, and it may be followed by a culture for more definitive results. Risks include infection or bleeding from the thoracentesis procedure. Positive results suggest a TB infection, guiding further treatment and management.600 BDT
