Vitreous Aspirate for Gram Stain
The Vitreous Aspirate for Gram Stain test is used to detect bacterial infections in the vitreous humor of the eye, often in cases of endophthalmitis or other intraocular infections. A sample of vitreous fluid is collected via aspiration using a sterile needle, typically under local anesthesia. The fluid is then stained using the Gram method and examined under a microscope to identify the presence of bacteria. Risks include mild discomfort, infection, or injury to the eye.
