Stool for Reducing Substance

A stool reducing substance test is used to detect the presence of non-digested sugars or carbohydrates in the stool, which can indicate malabsorption disorders. This test is often used to assess conditions such as lactose intolerance, celiac disease, or other gastrointestinal malabsorption syndromes. The procedure involves collecting a stool sample, which is then tested in the laboratory for the presence of reducing substances (mainly sugars like glucose, fructose, or lactose). These substances are detected when they are not fully absorbed in the intestine and pass into the stool. A positive result may suggest a malabsorption issue, while a negative result typically indicates normal digestion. Results are generally available within a day or two.
