Pleural Fluid for Cytology
Pleural fluid for cytology testing is used to examine the cells in the pleural fluid to help diagnose the cause of pleural effusion. It is especially useful for detecting cancerous cells, such as in cases of lung cancer, metastatic cancer, or mesothelioma. A sample of pleural fluid is obtained through thoracentesis (fluid aspiration) and sent to a laboratory, where it is examined under a microscope. The presence of malignant cells indicates cancer, while benign cells may suggest other conditions, such as infections or inflammation. Risks of the procedure include infection, bleeding, or puncture of the lung. Cytology results help guide further treatment decisions, especially in cancer diagnosis.600 BDT
