CSF C/S for AFB
Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF) Culture and Sensitivity for Acid-Fast Bacilli (AFB) is a diagnostic test to detect Mycobacterium tuberculosis in the CSF, typically in cases of suspected tuberculous meningitis. The test involves collecting CSF via lumbar puncture under sterile conditions. The sample is processed for AFB staining, culture on specific media (like Löwenstein-Jensen), and molecular tests like PCR for confirmation. Preparation includes fasting and ensuring sterile conditions. Risks include headache, infection, or rare neurological complications from the lumbar puncture. Results showing AFB-positive cultures confirm tuberculosis; however, false negatives can occur due to low bacterial load. Contamination or prior antibiotics may affect accuracy.600 BDT
