Sputum for GeneXpert (MTB) is a molecular diagnostic test used to detect Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB), the bacterium that causes tuberculosis (TB), in a sputum sample. The GeneXpert test uses real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technology to rapidly identify MTB DNA. It can also detect resistance to rifampicin, one of the key first-line drugs used to treat TB, which helps guide treatment decisions. The test is quick, typically providing results within 2-3 hours, and is highly sensitive, making it especially useful in diagnosing active TB and multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB).
