MRI of both temporomandibular (TM) joints is an imaging procedure used to evaluate the health and function of the jaw joints, which connect the lower jaw (mandible) to the skull. It is commonly used to diagnose conditions like temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD), joint inflammation, disc displacement, arthritis, or injuries to the ligaments and muscles around the joints. During the procedure, you will lie still inside an MRI scanner, and in some cases, a contrast dye may be injected to enhance the images. No special preparation is usually required, though fasting may be necessary if contrast is used. Risks are minimal but can include allergic reactions to the contrast dye and mild discomfort from staying still.
