MRI of both temporomandibular (TM) joints is a diagnostic imaging procedure used to evaluate the structures of the jaw joints, which connect the lower jaw (mandible) to the skull. It helps identify conditions like TMJ disorders, arthritis, joint inflammation, disc displacement, or damage to the ligaments and muscles around the joint. During the procedure, you will lie still in an MRI scanner, and a contrast dye may be injected to improve image clarity, particularly for soft tissues. No special preparation is typically required, but fasting might be recommended if contrast is used. Risks are minimal but may include allergic reactions to the contrast dye and mild discomfort from lying still.
