A Digital Barium Swallow of the Esophagus is an imaging procedure used to assess the esophagus. The patient swallows a barium contrast medium, which coats the walls of the esophagus, making it visible on X-ray images. This study helps diagnose conditions such as dysphagia (difficulty swallowing), reflux, strictures, tumors, or other abnormalities of the esophagus. The procedure provides a dynamic view of the swallowing process, allowing the physician to observe the movement of the barium. Preparation typically involves fasting for several hours.
