A CT scan of the thymus is used to evaluate the thymus gland, located in the chest, for conditions such as tumors, cysts, inflammation, or other abnormalities. During the procedure, you will lie on a table while the scanner takes detailed cross-sectional images of the thymus and surrounding structures in the chest. Preparation includes removing metal objects, such as jewelry, and possibly fasting for a few hours. The procedure is painless, and contrast dye may be used to improve image clarity. Risks include allergic reactions to contrast dye and radiation exposure. Results are interpreted by analyzing the images for growths, tumors, or other abnormalities.
