Bronchoalveolar Lavage for GeneXpert(MTB)
Bronchoalveolar Lavage (BAL) for GeneXpert (MTB) is a diagnostic procedure used to detect Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB), the bacteria that cause tuberculosis (TB), in the lungs. During bronchoscopy, a sterile saline solution is introduced into the alveoli and suctioned out to collect lung fluid. This fluid is then analyzed using the GeneXpert MTB test, which rapidly detects MTB DNA and provides results within hours. This test is particularly useful in diagnosing TB in patients with respiratory symptoms or abnormal chest X-rays. Risks include infection, bleeding, and discomfort.
