Broncho-alveolai Lavage for Gram Stain
Broncho-alveolar Lavage (BAL) for Gram Stain is a diagnostic procedure used to identify bacterial infections in the lungs. During bronchoscopy, a sterile saline solution is instilled into the alveoli (air sacs) and then suctioned out to collect fluid. This fluid is examined using a Gram stain, which helps classify bacteria into Gram-positive or Gram-negative types based on their cell wall structure. The test helps identify the bacterial pathogens responsible for infections such as pneumonia or bronchitis. Risks include infection, bleeding, or discomfort.
