Serum-ascites albumin gradient(SAAG)

The Serum-Ascites Albumin Gradient (SAAG) measures the difference in albumin levels between blood serum and ascitic fluid to determine the cause of ascites. The procedure involves collecting blood and ascitic fluid samples, usually through a paracentesis procedure (inserting a needle into the abdomen). No special preparation is needed. Risks include infection, bleeding, or injury during paracentesis. A SAAG ≥1.1 g/dL suggests portal hypertension, while <1.1 g/dL indicates non-portal hypertension causes, like cancer or infection. Results help differentiate liver-related ascites from other conditions affecting the abdomen.
