Sputum for AFB

Sputum for AFB (Acid-Fast Bacilli) is a diagnostic test used to detect the presence of Mycobacterium tuberculosis or other mycobacteria, which cause diseases like tuberculosis (TB). The procedure involves collecting a sputum sample, usually in the morning when bacterial concentrations are higher. The sample is stained using a method like Ziehl-Neelsen, which highlights acid-fast bacteria that retain the stain even after acid washing. If Mycobacterium species are present, they will appear as red, rod-shaped organisms under the microscope. Results are typically available within a few days. A positive result indicates an active mycobacterial infection, and further tests may follow to confirm and guide treatment.
