Spot Urine Protein Creatinine Ratio

The Spot Urine Protein/Creatinine Ratio (PCR) is a test used to assess the amount of protein in urine relative to the concentration of creatinine, which helps account for variations in urine volume and concentration. It is often used to screen for kidney disease, especially in conditions like diabetes, hypertension, or glomerulonephritis. An elevated protein-to-creatinine ratio can indicate kidney damage or dysfunction, as proteins (such as albumin) should typically be filtered out by healthy kidneys. The results are typically given in milligrams of protein per gram of creatinine (mg/g). This ratio is a convenient method for detecting proteinuria without needing a 24-hour urine collection.
