Short Synacthen Test

The Short Synacthen Test (SST) is used to assess adrenal gland function by measuring cortisol production after synthetic ACTH (adrenocorticotropic hormone) is administered. Preparation typically involves fasting for 8 hours before the test. During the procedure, a blood sample is taken to measure cortisol levels, followed by an injection of synthetic ACTH, then more samples are taken at 30 and 60 minutes. Risks include discomfort from the injection and slight dizziness or nausea. Results are interpreted by comparing cortisol levels before and after the injection. Low cortisol responses may indicate adrenal insufficiency, while normal responses suggest healthy adrenal function.
