Lactate
The lactate test measures the level of lactic acid in the blood, which can increase during conditions like sepsis, shock, or intense exercise. It helps diagnose and monitor conditions that cause tissue hypoxia (lack of oxygen). A blood sample is drawn, usually with no special preparation, though fasting may be advised. Risks are minimal, typically limited to minor discomfort or bruising. High lactate levels may indicate severe infections, liver or kidney disease, or metabolic conditions, while low levels are usually normal.
