HCT
The Hematocrit (HCT) test measures the proportion of red blood cells in the blood, expressed as a percentage. It helps diagnose and monitor conditions such as anemia, dehydration, or polycythemia. A blood sample is drawn from a vein or via a finger prick, and no fasting or special preparation is typically required. Normal HCT values vary by age, sex, and health, usually ranging from 38–50% for men, 36–44% for women, and 32–44% for children. Low HCT indicates anemia or blood loss, while high levels may suggest dehydration or a blood disorder. The procedure is safe, with minimal risks such as slight bruising.
