Growth Hormone Stimulation Test

The Growth Hormone Stimulation Test measures the pituitary gland's ability to produce growth hormone (GH) and is used to diagnose GH deficiency. Preparation involves fasting for 8-12 hours and avoiding vigorous exercise the day before. During the test, an IV is inserted, and specific medications (e.g., insulin, arginine, or clonidine) are administered to stimulate GH release. Blood samples are taken at intervals over 2-3 hours to track GH levels. The procedure is generally safe, though side effects like dizziness, nausea, or low blood sugar may occur. Low GH levels in response to stimulation may confirm GH deficiency. Factors like stress, medications, or improper fasting can influence results.
