GGT

GGT (Gamma-Glutamyl Transferase) is a blood test that measures the level of the GGT enzyme, which plays a role in breaking down proteins and transferring amino acids. It is primarily used to evaluate liver function and detect bile duct obstructions, liver disease, or chronic alcohol use. Preparation may involve fasting for up to 8 hours. During the test, a blood sample is drawn from a vein, typically in the arm. Risks are minimal, such as slight bruising or discomfort. Results are interpreted by comparing the GGT level to the normal range; elevated levels may indicate liver or bile duct issues. Certain medications and alcohol can affect results.
