Broncho-alveolai Lavage for Fungus

Broncho-alveolar Lavage (BAL) for Fungus is a diagnostic procedure used to detect fungal infections in the lungs. During a bronchoscopy, a sterile saline solution is introduced into the lower airways and suctioned out to collect fluid from the alveoli (air sacs). This fluid is sent to the laboratory for fungal culture to identify pathogens such as Aspergillus, Candida, or Histoplasma. The procedure is commonly used in immunocompromised patients or when fungal infections like aspergillosis or histoplasmosis are suspected. Risks include infection, bleeding, and discomfort. Results help guide treatment with antifungal medications tailored to the identified fungus.
