Broncho-alveolai Lavage for AFB Stain

Broncho-alveolar Lavage (BAL) for AFB Stain is a diagnostic procedure used to detect mycobacterial infections, such as tuberculosis (TB), in the lungs. During a bronchoscopy, a sterile saline solution is instilled into the lower airways and then suctioned out to collect fluid from the alveoli (air sacs in the lungs). This fluid is tested for Acid-Fast Bacilli (AFB) using a special stain, which highlights bacteria like Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The procedure helps identify TB or other mycobacterial infections. Risks include infection, bleeding, and discomfort. Results guide appropriate treatment with anti-TB medications.
