Vault Smear for Gram Stain
The Vault Smear for Gram Stain test is used to detect bacterial infections in the vaginal vault, often after a hysterectomy. A sterile swab is used to collect a sample from the vaginal vault, which is then stained with a Gram stain and examined under a microscope. The test classifies bacteria as Gram-positive or Gram-negative, helping to identify the type of infection. No special preparation is required. Risks are minimal, with slight discomfort during the swabbing process. Abnormal results may indicate a bacterial infection, while normal results suggest no infection.
