Coombs Test (D/I)
The Coombs Test (D/I), also known as the Direct/Indirect Coombs Test, is used to detect antibodies against red blood cells (RBCs). Direct Coombs Test (DCT): This test detects antibodies or complement proteins that are already attached to the surface of RBCs in the body. It is commonly used to diagnose conditions like autoimmune hemolytic anemia, where the immune system attacks its own red blood cells, or hemolytic disease of the newborn (HDN), which occurs when maternal antibodies attack fetal red blood cells. Indirect Coombs Test (ICT): This test detects antibodies that are present in the serum but are not yet bound to RBCs. It is primarily used in blood transfusion compatibility testing and pregnancy to assess the risk of HDN. Both tests help identify immune-related RBC destruction, guiding the diagnosis and treatment of hemolytic disorders.488 BDT650 BDT
