Complement 3 (C3)
Complement 3 (C3) is a protein that plays a crucial role in the complement system, part of the immune system that helps defend the body against infections and clears damaged cells. The C3 test measures the level of C3 in the blood, which can be elevated or decreased in various conditions. Low levels of C3 may indicate autoimmune diseases like systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), glomerulonephritis, or rheumatoid arthritis, while high levels can be seen in acute inflammation, infection, or liver disease. The C3 test is often used to help diagnose these conditions, monitor disease activity, and assess response to treatment.
