About
Professor Mohammad Ali, originating from Sylhet, Bangladesh, stands as a trailblazing figure in Hepato-Biliary-Pancreatic surgery within his country. He made history by conducting the first successful liver transplant in Bangladesh and remains the esteemed founder of the National Liver Foundation of Bangladesh. Graduating with distinction from Sylhet M.A.G Osmani Medical College and earning honors from Dhaka University in 1973, he embarked on his surgical journey at Chittagong Medical College Hospital in 1977. His professional milestones include obtaining Fellowship (FCPS) in Surgery from Bangladesh College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1982 and a further Fellowship in Surgery (FRCS Ed) from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, UK in 1994. Professor Ali's pursuit of expertise led him to receive specialized training in Hepato-Biliary-Pancreatic Surgery and Liver Transplantation from various esteemed institutions, including the Queensland Liver Transplant Services at the University of Queensland, Australia, and additional training at the University of Tokyo and the Department of Transplantation & Immunology, University of Kyoto, Japan. Prof. Ali established Bangladesh's first Hepato-Biliary-Pancreatic Surgery department at BIRDEM General Hospital, Dhaka, in 1999. He persistently worked towards establishing a dedicated Liver Transplant unit, equipped with state-of-the-art operation theaters and essential facilities, as a collaborative effort between the Government of Bangladesh and BADAS. Beyond his surgical achievements, he co-authored the textbook "Chronic Allograft Failure" published by Mayo Clinic Transplant Centre, USA, where he specifically edited the chapter on Hepatic Allograft loss. Driven by the preventability of most liver diseases, he spearheaded organized efforts in Bangladesh for their prevention. This dedication led to the founding of the National Liver Foundation of Bangladesh (NLFB) in 1999, a charitable institution dedicated to preventing, treating, educating, and researching liver diseases. Prof. Ali and NLFB actively engaged in controlling viral hepatitis in Bangladesh and represented the country in policymaking on the Regional Strategy for the prevention and control of viral hepatitis in the South East Asia region.
