HVS For AFB
High Vaginal Swab (HVS) for Acid-Fast Bacilli (AFB) is a specialized diagnostic test used to detect Mycobacterium tuberculosis or other acid-fast organisms in the vaginal tract. This test is typically performed when genital tuberculosis is suspected, often due to symptoms like abnormal discharge, infertility, or pelvic pain. A sterile swab is used to collect vaginal secretions, which are processed with acid-fast staining or cultured in a specialized medium. Preparation involves refraining from douching, vaginal medications, or sexual activity 24 hours prior. Risks are minimal, mainly limited to slight discomfort during swabbing. Results confirm the presence of AFB, guiding anti-tubercular treatment. Recent antibiotics may impact test sensitivity.600 BDT
