Sleep Apnea Treatment in Bangladesh

Management of Sleep Apnea

There are many different treatments for Sleep Apnea available in Bangladesh. Which type is suitable for a patient depends on the type of Sleep Apnea they have, the AHI score, the patient's health condition, other diseases that the patient might have and most importantly, the patient's preference. The following are some of the treatment modalities used in Bangladesh:

  1. PAP Device - This is a simple mask device that makes it easy for the patient to breathe by opening up their blocked airway. The most commonly used type is called AutoPAP or AutoCPAP. There are also other types of PAP devices such as manual CPAP, BiPAP or ASV PAP. PAP devices are the most commonly used treatment for Sleep Apnea.
  2. Tirzepatide Injection - this is an injection that has been specifically created to treat Obstructive Sleep Apnea. It is a subcutaneous injection (given under the patient's skin) that is taken once every week.
  3. Mandibular Advancement Devices (MADs) - these are special mouth guard-like devices that pull the jaw forward during sleep. For many patients, this helps to reduce the airway blockage at night and help them to breathe unhindered.
  4. Weight loss - reducing weight decreases AHI of Obstructive Sleep Apnea in most patients. Patient who have very low AHI sometimes can cure their OSA entirely with just weight loss. Hence weight loss is suggested to most Sleep Apnea patients even if it cant cure the disease completely.
  5. Myofunctional Therapy (MT) - this is a special type of therapy or group of exercises that can be done under the supervision of MT specialists that can restructure the walls of a patient's airway. This restructuring helps reduce Apnea for many patients.
  6. Sleep Apnea Surgery - this is often the last resort for Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) patients. If none of the other treatment modalities are able to successfully manage the disease, then some specific Surgeries can be performed to essentially widen up the patient's airway. This reduces the amount of blockage and thus reduces the AHI. Important to note: many patients still require use of PAP devices even after surgery.
